Mission: The mission of the Bureau of Environmental Remediation is to respond to environmental emergencies and to manage environmental contamination through pollution source control, containment, or remedial action. The program responsibilities are: investigation of pollution occurrences and sources from spills, illegal dumping, abandoned facilities, and landfills; storage tank regulations; surface mining site regulation and designing and overseeing remedial activities at contaminated sites.

Current and Upcoming Events
  • Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Storage Tank Section will accept extension applications for Class A/B Operator Training and on June 22, 2020, updated information for consultants working on Storage Tank Section projects.
  • Amended Storage Tank Act and Regulations. The Kansas Legislature passed an amendment to the Storage Tank Statutes in a special session in May 2020, extending the sunset date of the UST Removal and Replacement program through July 1, 2021. The approved amended Storage Tank Regulations were published by the Secretary of State in the Kansas Register on June 18, 2020, and go into effect July 6, 2020.
  • Updated VCPRP Manual. BER has created a 2020 edition of the Voluntary Cleanup and Property Redevelopment Manual that describes the program and includes program updates.
  • Kansas Environmental Information Management System (KEIMS) - BER. BER's New Online Data Management System.
