How to Amend Marriage Certificates
There are several state statutes and regulations that govern the process to amend marriage certificates. Depending on the item being amended, the procedures that you need to follow will vary. Below are some of the common questions and answers regarding amending a marriage license. Note: We reserve the right to accept or decline requests using information you provide or we may require that additional court records be obtained to process the amendment in order to insure that we are in compliance with the state statutes and regulations.
Customer Question: The party’s name, date of birth, place of birth, or parent’s names are incorrect. How do I change those items?
Answer: You will need to provide our office with a certified copy of both parties' birth certificate as proof of the correct information. We also need a notarized request from both parties stating that they both want to amend the marriage license. Click here for a sample of a notarized statement for the parties.
Customer Question: The date or place of marriage is incorrect. How do I correct the date of marriage or place of marriage?
Answer: You will need to provide our office with a notarized letter from both parties stating that they both want to amend the marriage license. Note: If the person that performed the ceremony is unable to sign because they are deceased, we can accept affidavits from one of the witnesses to the ceremony.
