Hepatitis A Virus infections occur as a result of poor sanitary habits, and many times include people who handle food. It is imperative to find those people who work in the food service industry who may pass on Hepatitis a Virus. Day care setting and unsanitary conditions among IV drug users are additional risk areas.
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Virus infections are passed by contaminated body fluids (e.g., blood transfusion, IV drug use, and sexual transmission) from an infected person. Hepatitis B can pass from mother to infant during birth. Blood banks routinely test their blood supplies to ensure safe blood for transfusion. The KDHE laboratory focuses their resources on pre-natal infant care, as well as IV drug users and their sexual partners or other sexual transmission cases.
