Verdigris Basin TMDLsKDHE has completed the first round of TMDLs within the Verdigris Basin based on the 1998 – 303(d) list, and is currently developing additional TMDLs within the basin based on the 2008 – 303(d) list. There are 20 approved TMDLs within the Verdigris Basin that describe the strategies and goals to reduce pollution to achieve water quality standards. Of these, there are 7 that are high priority for implementation. KDHE develops TMDLs on a basin-by-basin approach and will revisit existing TMDLs and develop new TMDLs within the Verdigris Basin in 2008 and 2013. The 2008 - Section 303(d) list submitted to and approved by EPA identifies watersheds associated with six stream chemistry sampling stations and two biological monitoring station as water quality impaired. There are seven lakes and wetlands in the Verdigris River Basin listed as water quality impaired. Among the streams: copper causes the greatest numbers of impairments. Other pollutants limiting the use of the Verdigris River Basin streams include zinc, lead, dissolved oxygen deficiency and E. Coli bacteria. Among the lakes: eutrophic conditions indicative of excessive algae production, dissolved oxygen depletion, and siltation were the causes of impairment. Each parameter causing impairment requires a TMDL. |
