Newborn
Hearing Screening Program
Steps to Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
- Newborn hearing screening prior to discharge
from the hospital (birth admission screening)
- Follow-up screening for those infants who
do not pass the birth admission screening (outpatient screening)
completed by one month of age
- Infants who do not pass the outpatient screening
are referred for an infant audiologic evaluation to confirm
if a hearing loss is present, completed by three months of
age
- Intervention no later than six months of
age. The process of parent education and the initiation of
intervention can occur soon after the infant's birth.
- It is important that families follow
through with any recommendations made by the infant's physician,
hospital staff or audiologist.
