Support Safe Kids Kansas

Welcome to Safe Kids

Safe Kids Kansas Inc., is a Coalition of over 70 statewide and regional organizations and businesses dedicated to preventing unintentional injuries to Kansas children ages 0-14. Unfortunately, preventable injury remains the leading killer of Kansas children ages 1-14, taking more lives than any other cause including diseases, homicide and suicide. This year, one child in four will suffer a preventable injury that is serious enough to require medical attention. Safe Kids Kansas is a 501c(3) charitable organization and is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide. The designated lead agency for Safe Kids Kansas is the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Spot the Tot

All vehicles, large and small, have a blind zone. However, in that rush to get to the store before it closes, the focus of the driver may not be on what is hidden around the vehicle.  Anyone driving a vehicle should take a five-second walk completely around it to check for children before putting the vehicle into gear. This applies even to drivers who do not have children but may have kids in the neighborhood.

Parents, caregivers and drivers can follow these tips to help make sure that children remain safe around vehicles:

  • Before getting behind the wheel, walk all the way around the parked vehicle to make sure children are not under or around it before you put it into gear.

  • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult when getting in and out of a vehicle.

  • Find a safe play area for children to use far away from parked or moving vehicles.

  • Avoid using driveways as play areas if moving cars will be entering or leaving.

  • Have a safe spot for children to go when nearby vehicles are about to move. Young children should be supervised to ensure they do not chase after a moving vehicle.

  • When walking near moving vehicles, in driveways, in parking lots, or on sidewalks – firmly hold hands with each child that is with you.

  • Teach children that a parked vehicle may begin moving at any time.  Just because they see the vehicle doesn’t mean the driver can see them.

  • Teach children to keep a safe distance from emergency vehicles when not in an educational setting such as a field trip or health fair.
