Project Summary

One goal of this project is to increase knowledge and skills necessary to develop non-violent relationships among middle school students attending two schools in Wyandotte County. Sexual violence primary prevention longitudinal programming is presented throughout the school year to single sex, male and female, 6-8th grade classrooms in the identified schools. MOSCA incorporates a culminating community poster project that involves both teachers and students. In March 2003, this agency was selected as one of four programs in the nation to participate in the CDC empowerment evaluation. Through this project they received training and developed program logic models, evaluation tools and were trained on how to analyze and interpret their data results.

Summary:

MOCSA primary prevention education program consisted of two middle schools and 6 to 7 sessions with all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in those middle schools. MOCSA gleaned the following from their focus group data, which helped make significant changes to their program.

  • Results from one middle school for the Spring 2004 semester show a significant increase in survey scores on several constructs including:
    • Knowledge regarding consent.
    • Knowledge regarding sexual harassment.
    • Attitude regarding respectful behavior.
  • The following quotes from the focus groups show support for the significant change in these constructs.
    • "I am more aware of how sexual harassment makes you feel and how much of it goes on everywhere. When I see it happen I will be able to support that person and help them." 8th grade boy.
    • “If you see a boy mistreating a girl, I think you should confront the boy and the girl too because letting her know how dangerous he is and to let him know how disrespectful he is towards her." 6th grade girl.
    • "If there's something wrong, like, if you got something on your mind, instead of telling it to your friends and your homies, go talk to your girl…if you got something wrong with your relationship, like you're not comfortable, you've got to speak up." 6th grade boy.
    • “What I learned gave me the confidence to stand up for who I am and what I believe in” 8th grade boy.
