Asbestos

Asbestos - General Public

The Asbestos program for the State of Kansas is located in the Bureau of Air and Radiation, Radiation and Asbestos Control Section. Kansas Asbestos Control statutes and regulations along with KDHE's authorizations to implement the federal environmental Protections Agency (EPA) National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for asbestos form the basis of protection from asbestos during removal of asbestos containing materials.

Regulations exist to protect the public from the potentially harmful effects of exposure to asbestos fibers during removal, renovation and demolition in commercial and public buildings. Although homeowners doing work on their own residence are not covered under the Kansas or federal regulations, they are strongly encouraged to visit the EPA web site http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/pubs/ashome.html for more information about asbestos. A list of Kansas Licensed Asbestos Contractors can be found in the links below.

If you have questions about asbestos, please give us a call. The supervisor of the Asbestos program is Scott Bangert. He can be reached at 785-296-1689. For additional program contacts and e-mail addresses, please see the Contact Us tab on the left hand side of this page.

Asbestos - Regulated Community

The Asbestos program for the State of Kansas is located in the Bureau of Air and Radiation, Radiation and Asbestos Control Section. The Kansas Asbestos Control statutes and regulations establish training requirements as well as work practices and engineering controls to protect workers, the public and the environment from exposure to asbestos fibers during abatement. Companies completing asbestos abatement are required to be licensed and workers certified. Abatement notifications are required to be submitted at least 10 working days before abatement begins. The information provided below will assist you in complying with the State regulations regarding Asbestos.

KDHE also has authority to implement the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for asbestos as found in 40C.F.R Part 61.145. The NESHAP requires the owner or operator to have an inspection completed prior to any renovation or demolition of commercial or public structures. For demolition a notification is required at least 10 working days prior to the start of the demolition (even if asbestos is not found in the inspection).
