| Little Blue River Stream bank Stabilization & Riparian Area Restoration |
The goal of this project is to stabilize 6,460 feet of eroding stream
bank on the Little Blue River in Washington County, Kansas. Bendway weirs,
in conjunction with bank shaping will be employed to stabilize the sites
and reduce sediment and nutrient deposition, 100 feet of riparian buffer
and grass filter will be established at each site, resulting in 14.8 acres
of riparian restoration. All of the sites, except for one, have been farmed
to the edge of the stream bank. The landowners will be required to enroll
a minimum of 100 feet in the USDA Continuous conservation reserve program
with a minimum of 34 feet planted to trees and to maintain the project
for a minimum of 10 years and to allow limited organized tours of the sites. |

| Washington County Water Quality Improvement 1 & 2 |
The goal of this project is to reduce fecal coliform bacteria, nutrient
and pesticide runoff, and sedimentation from agricultural fields by promoting
the installation of grass filters. Project objectives include: 1. Purchase
a no-till grass drill; 2. Publicize availability of the drill; 3. Installation
of grass filter strips: Year 2001 - 60 users, install 300 acres of grass
filters; Year 2002 - 70 users, install 400 acres of grass filters. |
