| Kanopolis Lake-Smokey Hill River Watershed Water Quality Protection
Information and Education Project - Part 1 & 2 |
The purpose of this project is to inform and educate communities in
the seven counties the Kanopolis lake watershed intersects of the value
of Kanopolis lake and its tributary streams as a public water supply, recreation
area and aquatic life support. Information and education activities include
a newsletter, task force, participation in local events (such as county
fairs) and newspaper articles. This project also will help inform watershed
stakeholders of a companion watershed assessment project being performed
by Kansas State University. The KSU project is using AGNPS (a computer
model) to estimate watershed pollutant loads discharged to Kanopolis lake
under various watershed management scenarios. Once the KSU work is completed,
Post Rock will provide leadership in formulating water quality goals for
the lake and watershed. |
| Kanopolis Watershed Assessment |
The Watershed Management Section has granted 319 funding to the Clay
County Conservation District to implement the Addressing Water Quality
Concerns on Clay County Farmsteads project. This project is intended to
identify 5 farmsteads in Clay County to complete the River Friendly Farms
Assessment. Each farmer will receive an incentive of $100 for completing
the assessment. After the assessment is complete, each farmer will be eligible
for an additional $1,000 to address the most significant pollution concern
identified during the assessment. |
