| Performance Evaluation of Wetlands in NE Kansas |
Constructed wetlands may offer a cost effective way to manage wastes
collected at animal feeding operations. KSU has developed a project to
test the effectiveness of constructed wetlands to remove nutrients from
animal feeding operation wastes. The KSU project proposal outlines monitoring
and analysis to: 1) quantify the level of treatment offered by the system
in response to various waste loading rates, environmental conditions, and
management practices; and 2) support development of a baseline model that
will help refine the design of future systems to meet the demands of different
environmental and hydrologic regions in Kansas. |

| Waste Management Water Quality Protection Learning Center |
Create a learning center on the campus of Kansas State University to
demonstrate innovative waste management strategies for livestock, home
and other types of wastes and will lead to water quality protection. I.
Implement educational programs to train students, field professionals (extension
and NRCS), professionals from private groups, local government personnel,
agricultural producers and others working waste management. The center
will demonstrate center pivot system for land application, constructed
wetland, composting, vegetative filter strips and runoff retention pond. |
