| Hillsdale Water Quality Protection Project 1-10 |
The Hillsdale Water Quality Project, Inc. is based on the principles
of community watershed environmental protection planning and implementation.
The Board of Directors has established the following objectives: 1) Educate
the public about point and nonpoint sources of pollution in the watershed;
2) Introduce pollution control practices in agricultural areas, construction
sites, and neighborhoods to protect water quality and the total natural
resource base; 3) Solidify the project's organizational structure and funding
to insure long -term protection of the lake's watershed. These objectives
will be achieved by developing volunteer groups within the communities
to provide education programs to the public; implement, in cooperation
with residents, pollution control practices; monitor the lake and tributaries
with the assistance of volunteers; and devise long -range planning to accommodate
the growth in development of the watershed. |

| Lake Olathe Watershed Protection Plan Part 1 & 2 |
KDHE currently administers 319 funding to the City of Olathe to implement
the Lake Olathe Watershed Protection Plan. The City of Olathe is using
the 319 funding to hire USGS to complete a three-year study of Lake Olathe.
USGS is conducting water quality sampling to determine the cause of seasonal
taste and odor problems in the lake. Lake Olathe currently provides 10%
of the City''s drinking water supply. It is believed the lake is in a moderate
state of eutrophication. The City of Olathe, in conjunction with KSU and
KBS, will also implement a watershed protection plan for Lake Olathe that
will focus on limiting nutrient input into the watershed. |
