| Environmental and Economic Analysis of Switch grass Production for
Water Quality Improvement in Northeast Kansas - Part 1 & 2 |
The objective of this project is to determine the water quality benefits
of planting switch grass on parcels of cropland having steeper slopes in
northeast Kansas. In addition to determining the pollutant load reduction
resulting from such an action, an economic analysis of harvesting switch
grass for energy production will be performed. This analysis for the Perry
Reservoir watershed was completed at less cost than anticipated which permits
the expansion of the analysis to northeast Kansas. |

| Jefferson Co./Perry Lake Water Quality Protection Project |
This project is in a Category I watershed with TMDLs for fecal coliform
bacteria. It has also been the focal point for a state designated Pesticide
Management Area for the past several years. The goal of this project was
to lend financial and technical assistance to the Jefferson County Conservation
District to develop and implement water quality protection measures. The
target area is the county, however, specific emphasis was being placed
on Perry Reservoir due to its public water supply status. Water quality
protection education and demonstrations are planned. A no-till drill for
implementing buffer strips was purchased under shares by KDHE and the District.
A database will be created to account for participants, acres of buffer,
types of planting etc. The District also entered into lease agreements
with the Army Corps of Engineers to enable water quality protection measures
to be implemented on Corps owned land. Other practices will be promoted
as needed or as recommended by KDHE. The manager has atten |
