Sand Springs Aquifer-NPS Pollution Control Part 1-4 The Sand Springs Water Quality Protection Project was initiated to address a problem of nitrate concentrations exceeding 10 mg/L in Abilene public water supply wells. The project intends to assure that drinking water produced from the Sand Springs aquifer meets applicable standards and needs of city and county residents. Improved water quality will be achieved by reducing the amount of nitrates and other potential contaminants entering the Sand Springs aquifer and environment. The project is under the direction of a five-person board appointed by the City of Abilene and Dickinson County. Grant funds provided by KDHE - Nonpoint Source Section are used to employ a project administrator and support information and education activities, special investigations and pollution control - water quality protection demonstration projects.
