Public Comments Solicited for Proposed Modification
of the City of Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, Permit No. 144

TOPEKA- The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announces its intention to issue a permit modification for the City of Salina Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill. The facility is located at 4292 South Burma Road southwest of Salina in Saline County, and the MSW landfill is all contained within Section 7, Township 15 South, Range 3 West.

The total facility permitted area remains unchanged at approximately 656.5 acres. City officials have proposed adding 9.6 acres of landfill disposal area to their existing 280.1 acres for a total of 289.7 acres of disposal area. City officials also proposed increasing the final elevation of the landfill from elevation 1,408 to approximately 1,545 feet above mean sea level.  The additional acreage and elevation increase will add approximately 8.4 million cubic yards of capacity or approximately 73 years of disposal at current disposal rates. KDHE will accept written comments on the proposed action through March 1. Comments that are postmarked by March 1, 2013, and received within one week thereafter will also be considered.

A copy of the permit application, engineering drawings and draft permit will be available for public review at, the Salina Public Library, 301 W. Elm, in Salina, Kan., and during normal business hours at KDHE in Curtis State Office Building, 1000 SW Jackson, Suite 320, in Topeka.
