For Immediate Release
KDHE Office of Communications
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at the FMC Corporation Site located at 440 North Ninth Street, Lawrence, Kansas.
The facility was initially developed in the early 1950s and releases of arsenic to the environment occurred during historical manufacturing operations. The FMC Corporation has conducted investigation activities to determine the extent of contamination. In June 2000, a Consent Order (Case No. 95-E-0122) was executed between KDHE and the FMC Corporation which required the company to evaluate clean-up alternatives and implement remediation of contamination under KDHE oversight.
A draft Corrective Action Decision (CAD) document that outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review at the Lawrence Public Library and at the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka.
Public comments can be submitted in writing to: Natalie Burris, Environmental Scientist, KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation, 1000 SW Jackson St., Suite 410, Topeka, KS 66612-1367. Comments will be accepted until July 6.
