KDHE Seeks Public Comments on Proposed Cleanup at
Missouri Pacific Railroad Freight House Site in Salina

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at the former Missouri Pacific Railroad Freight House Site located at 353 N. Seventh Street, Salina.

Missouri Pacific Railroad constructed the freight house in 1910 and operated at the facility until 1995. On July 18, 2006, a consent order was signed between KDHE and Union Pacific Railroad, successor to Missouri Pacific Railroad, which required an investigation of the contamination and evaluation of clean-up alternatives under KDHE oversight.

A draft which outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review at the Salina Public Library, 301 W. Elm Street.

Public comments can be submitted in writing to: Maggie Weiser, Environmental Scientist, KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation, 1000 SW Jackson St., Suite 410, Topeka, KS 66612-1367. Comments will be accepted until May 19.
