The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public hearing on the proposed expansion plan of the Johnson County Landfill on Tuesday, January 11.
The proposed expansion would increase the permitted site's disposal capacity from 73 million cubic yards to 86 million cubic yards. The currently permitted area of the facility is approximately 850 acres with 409 acres permitted for disposal of solid waste. The proposed expansion, Phase 1 Modification, will overlap past disposal phases on the east, south and west.
The public hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, on January 11. An informational meeting regarding the proposal will occur at 6 p.m.
Public comments on the proposed facility will be accepted until January 14 and can be submitted in writing to KDHE, Attention Bureau of Waste Management - Solid Waste Permitting Section, Suite 320, 1000 SW Jackson Street, Topeka, Kansas 66612.
