Proposed Construction and Demolition Landfill in Baxter Springs

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comment on the proposed construction and operation of a construction and demolition landfill by Robison Environmental Services, LLC at 2801 Southeast Treece Road, southwest of Baxter Springs.  The public comment period will run October 22 to December 8.

The administrative record including the draft permit, permit application, engineering drawings and other information is available for public review at the Johnston Public Library, 210 W. 10th Street in Baxter Springs and the KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 W. 7th in Chanute during the comment period.  The permit application form is also available at www.kdheks.gov/waste

The proposed construction and demolition waste landfill consists of a permitted waste disposal area of two acres on an 18.3 acre site.  The 40,000 yards of disposal capacity, if approved would last about 10 years at projected disposal rates.

An informational meeting and public hearing on the landfill permit will be held November 29 in the Baxter Springs Community Center located at 1101 East Avenue in Baxter Springs.  Beginning at 6 p.m. there will be a public information session to ask KDHE personnel questions regarding the landfill in an informal setting.  At 7 p.m., a public hearing will be held for individuals to make formal comments that will be recorded.

Public comments on the proposed landfill can be submitted in writing to KDHE, Charles Bowers, Southeast District Office, 1500 West 7th Street, Chanute, 66720 or by fax to (620) 431-1211 or via e-mail to cbowers@kdheks.gov.
