The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Atchison, which is located in Atchison County.
KDHE officials are issuing the advisory due to a line break on the raw water line feeding the water treatment plant. Therefore, the City is unable to treat and produce drinking water which in turn has caused the distribution system to lose pressure and run dry. When a system loses pressure it is possible for contaminants to enter the system. Also during this time, disinfection (chlorine) residuals may drop to levels that are inadequate to protect against bacterial contamination.
The City of Atchison wholesales water to many consecutive systems. While the consecutive systems have not reported a loss of water service, they are expected to lose pressure and water service through the course of the day. As systems are affected, they should follow the boil water advisory. These systems include: Atchison County RWD 6, Atchison County RWD 1, Atchison County RWD 3, Atchison County RWD 5C, Doniphan County RWD 3 and the City of Lancaster.
Once water service is restored, residents in the City of Atchison and those affected by the above mentioned systems should observe the following precautions:
The advisory will remain in effect until testing of water samples indicates no evidence of contamination and all other conditions which place the systems at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. The City and/or KDHE will notify media when the boil water advisory has been rescinded. Concerned customers may contact the City by telephone at 913-367-5500.
