Second Public Comment Period for Sunflower to Begin September 23

The second public comment period for the Sunflower Electric Power Corp air quality construction permit will be held September 23-October 23. A second public comment period is being held to accommodate corrections Sunflower needed to make to its air pollution dispersion modeling data. The second public comment period includes all aspects of the permit.

During the first public comment period, more than 4,600 comments were received. These comments will be taken into consideration and included in the responsiveness summary – they do not need to be resubmitted.

A final public hearing will be held in Topeka on Monday, October 25 at 2 p.m. It will be held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Convention Center (Sunflower Ballroom), 1717 SW Topeka Blvd. Both oral and written comments will be accepted during the hearing.

Following the conclusion of the comment period and the public hearing, staff will review the comments and prepare a responsiveness summary which will then go to the Director of Environment and then to the Secretary for final decision.

All comments should be submitted between September 23 and October 23 by e-mail to sunflowercomments@kdheks.gov, or in writing to: KDHE Bureau of Air, Attn.: Sunflower Comments, 1000 S.W. Jackson, Suite 310, Topeka, KS 66612-1366 or presented at the hearing.

A copy of the draft permit, permit application, supporting documentation, and information relied upon during the permit application review process are available for public review online at http://www.kdheks.gov/bar/sunflower/sunflower.html or at the above Topeka address during normal business hours (8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday – Friday) September 23 through October 23.
