The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) seeks public comments on a draft permit for the construction and operation of a municipal solid waste landfill in McPherson County at 1481 Pueblo Road. The proposed landfill will be operated by the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility which currently operates a KDHE-permitted construction and demolition landfill at the site.
McPherson County has submitted an application to permit 350 acres for municipal solid waste disposal. The proposed landfill would be built in a series of phases and include a composite liner system and leachate collection system as required by state regulations. The landfill’s initial phase would provide for approximately 60 years of McPherson County waste disposal at current generation rates.
An informational meeting will begin at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 20 in McPherson at Central Christian College, Reimer Hall, Room 1128. A public hearing will follow at 7 p.m.
KDHE will accept written comments on the proposed landfill from Friday, June 18, until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27. Information, including the draft permit for the landfill, will be available at the McPherson Public Library, the KDHE North Central District Office and the Topeka office of KDHE. It can also be viewed online at http://www.kdheks.gov/waste. The public notice provides telephone numbers and locations.
Comments should be sent to Charles Bowers, KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 West 7th, Chanute, KS 66720, by fax to 620-431-1211, or by e-mail to email@example.com. Comments postmarked by July 27 and received within one week thereafter will also be considered. After the comment period closes KDHE will respond in writing to all formal comments received.
