First Lady Stacy Parkinson and Roderick Bremby, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), recognized SAFEHOME, Inc., Johnson County for its role in Kansas’ recent receipt of the Safe States Alliance 2010 “Innovative Initiative of the Year” Award.
Entitled “The Outrage,” SAFEHOME’s production is performed by high school student volunteers with the goal to provide teens educational information about teen dating violence and sexual assault.
“SAFEHOME is an exemplary organization that I have been proud to partner with over the years to address domestic violence in our communities,” said the First Lady. “As the mother of three teenagers, I am especially grateful for their campaign on teen dating violence. SAFEHOME recognizes that teens deserve to go to homecoming and prom, have fun at football games and movies, not feel alone or afraid at the hands of someone they know.”
The Innovative Initiative of the Year Award is awarded to one state each year and is selected exclusively by the members of the Safe States Alliance – a national non-profit organization comprised of hundreds of injury and violence prevention professionals and experts. KDHE’s Injury Prevention and Disability Program is a member of the Safe States Alliance.
“The Outrage” was recognized not only for its innovative characteristics, but also because it highlights the commitment Kansas has made to addressing issues of sexual violence throughout the state.
“KDHE has developed partnerships with local community agencies to support sexual violence primary prevention programming and develop innovative initiatives with community support,” said Roderick Bremby, KDHE Secretary.
KDHE receives funding for sexual violence primary prevention efforts through the Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. KDHE contracts with six entities in Kansas to provide prevention efforts, one of those being SAFEHOME, a Domestic Violence Crisis center in Johnson County.
