KDHE Seeks Public Comments on Proposed Cleanup at
Brown Welding Supply Site in Salina

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at the Brown Welding Site at 300 N. Seventh Street, Salina.  The former Brown Welding Supply, LLC provided welding supplies and various services at that location.

A draft Corrective Action Decision document that outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review and copying during normal business hours at the Salina Public Library, 301 W. Elm Street in Salina.  Please contact the reference desk at the library at (785) 825-4624 to locate the site documents.

Brown Welding Supply, LLC operated the facility from 1962 to 1999.  On December 2, 2002, a consent order was signed between KDHE and Brown Welding Supply, LLC, which required the company to conduct an investigation of the contamination and evaluate clean-up alternatives under KDHE oversight.

After the public comment period concludes, KDHE will then announce its decision on how the cleanup will be performed in a final Corrective Action Decision document.  This document will also summarize and address comments received during the public comment period.

Public comments can be submitted in writing to: Maggie Weiser, Environmental Scientist, KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation, 1000 SW Jackson St., Suite 410, Topeka, KS 66612-1367. Comments must be postmarked March 1 through March 31, 2010, in order to be considered.
