The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is pleased to announce the recipients of a grant competition to support voluntary clean diesel projects across the state. In April, KDHE was awarded $1.73 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and held the grant competition to disperse the funds. The funds were provided to EPA by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) of 2009.
“These grant awards will not only benefit the award recipients, but also the citizens of the state,” Roderick L. Bremby, Secretary of KDHE said. “Diesel emission reductions mean cleaner air and a healthier environment for Kansans.”
KDHE accepted grant applications from Kansas-owned diesel fleets. Eligible projects included: idling reduction, retrofit technologies, engine upgrades, cleaner fuels and replacement of vehicles. The application process yielded 47 applications from across the state. The applications were assessed on potential emission reductions that were calculated using EPA’s Diesel Emission Quantifier.
