KDHE Seeks Public Comments on Proposed Cleanup at
Main and Avenue G Site in Hutchinson

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at the Main and Avenue G Site at 700 South Main Street in Hutchinson.  Midwest Iron and Metal Company operates a metal salvage and recycling facility at that location.

Public comments can be submitted in writing by mailing them to:

Mary Daily, Professional Geologist
KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation
1000 SW Jackson St., Suite 410
Topeka, KS 66612-1367

Comments must be postmarked April 15 through May 14, 2009, in order to be considered.

A draft Corrective Action Decision document that outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review and copying during normal business hours at the Hutchinson Public Library, 901 N. Main Street in Hutchinson.  Please contact the reference desk at the library at (620) 663-5441 to locate the site documents.

KDHE will announce its decision on how the cleanup will be performed in a final Corrective Action Decision document.  This document will also summarize and address comments received during the public comment period.

Salvage operations at the site began in 1939.  On March 31, 2001, a consent order was signed between KDHE and Midwest Iron and Metal Company, which required the company to conduct an investigation of the contamination and evaluate cleanup alternatives under KDHE oversight.
