The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at the Groendyke Transport, Inc. facility at 301 North Kirby Street in Hutchinson.  The property is owned by V & M Transport, Inc., and operated as a Groendyke Transport, Inc. truck terminal.

Public comments can be submitted in writing by mailing them to:

Mary Daily, Professional Geologist
KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation
1000 S.W. Jackson St., Suite 410
Topeka, KS 66612-1367

Comments must be postmarked March 25 through April 23, 2009, in order to be considered.

A draft Corrective Action Decision document that outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review and copying during normal business hours at the Hutchinson Public Library, 901 N. Main Street in Hutchinson.  Please contact the reference desk at the library at (620) 663-5441 to locate the site documents.

KDHE will announce its decision on how the cleanup will be performed in a final Corrective Action Decision document.  This document will also summarize and address comments received during the public comment period.

Operations at the site began in 1955.  On December 29, 1999, a consent order was signed between KDHE, Groendyke Transport, Inc., and V & M Transport, Inc., which required the companies to conduct an investigation of the contamination and evaluate cleanup alternatives under KDHE oversight.
