MEDIA ADVISORY: Diabetes Screening to be Held March 23
in Docking State Office Building

March 24 is Diabetes Alert Day

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the Kansas Diabetes Advisory Council will host a diabetes screening event for legislators from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in Room B-21 in the basement level of the Docking State Office Building, 915 S.W. Harrison, Topeka, on Monday, March 23. A media availability session held in conjunction with the screening event will take place at noon.

In addition, a resolution is scheduled to be read in the House Chamber at the Capitol at 11 a.m. and in the Senate chamber at 2:30 p.m. to acknowledge Diabetes Alert Day and direct the Kansas Diabetes Advisory Council to submit a report to the legislature in 2010 on the progress of the Kansas Diabetes Plan. Members of the media are also invited to attend the reading of the resolution.

The Kansas Diabetes Plan was unveiled in July 2008 and provides guidance for collaborative statewide efforts to reduce the burden of diabetes and improve the health of Kansans over the next five years. More than 150,000 Kansans have been diagnosed with diabetes and over 90 percent of those have Type 2 diabetes which can be prevented or delayed.
