The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public participation meeting on Monday, November 17 regarding the proposed construction of a municipal solid waste landfill to be operated by McPherson County at 1482 Pueblo Road, north of the city of McPherson. This site is adjacent to an existing construction and demolition (C&D) landfill already operated by the county.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Greer Auditorium in the Wesley Black Fine Arts Building located at 1100 S. Main in McPherson, on the Central Christian College campus. A brief presentation on the permit review process will be followed by an informal opportunity for the public to get information on the proposed landfill. KDHE staff will be available to discuss how design, geology and operation will be evaluated through the technical review of the landfill permit application.
The proposed landfill would have a permitted waste disposal area of 315 acres on a 559 acre site. The additional 28.8 million yards of disposal capacity, if approved, would last McPherson County for more than 100 years at projected disposal rates.
Anyone interested in learning more about the project or providing input to KDHE staff early in the permit review process is encouraged to attend. The meeting will not cover zoning or land use issues previously addressed by the McPherson County Commission.
By state law, KDHE must determine if the landfill application meets all required engineering, geological and environmental standards before issuing a permit. Only a preliminary evaluation of the application has been conducted at this time. KDHE will perform a detailed technical review of the application followed by a formal public notice before a final determination is made on whether to issue a permit modification for the landfill expansion.
