KDHE Seeks Public Comments on Proposed Cleanup at
Former Texaco Site near Conway

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is asking for public comments regarding a proposal to address environmental contamination at a site formerly operated by Texaco Trading and Transportation, Inc. The site is located about seven miles west of McPherson between Kiowa Road and Limestone Road near Conway.

Public comments can be submitted in writing by mailing them to:

Steve Bryant, Professional Geologist
KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation
1000 S.W. Jackson St., Suite 410
Topeka, KS 66612-1367

Comments must be postmarked November 3 through December 3, 2008 in order to be considered.

A draft Corrective Action Decision document that outlines a proposal for cleanup is available for public review and copying by appointment during normal business hours at the McPherson Library, 214 W. Marlin, in McPherson. Please contact Jennie Hall at (620) 245-2570 to schedule an appointment.

KDHE will announce its decision on how the cleanup will be performed in a final Corrective Action Decision document. This document will also summarize and address comments received during the public comment period.

Operations at the site began in the mid-1950s. On December 19, 1994, a consent order was signed between KDHE and Texaco which required the company to complete site investigation tasks and evaluate potential corrective actions. The location is now owned and operated by ONEOK.
