The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public comment period regarding the proposed expansion of a construction and demolition landfill operated by Reno County. The landfill is currently operated under a permit from KDHE and is located at 703 S. Mohawk Road, west of Hutchinson.
Reno County has submitted an application to expand the landfill from 26.37 acres to 52.87 acres. The permit modification would increase capacity by about 2.4 million cubic yards and potentially provide Reno County with sufficient capacity to dispose construction and demolition waste for over 40 years.
An informational meeting and public hearing on the expansion will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, November 24 at the Hutchinson Public Library’s second floor auditorium, at 901 N. Main in Hutchinson. At the informational meeting, concerned individuals can ask KDHE personnel questions regarding the landfill’s operations in an informal setting. At 7 p.m., a public hearing will be held for individuals to make formal comments that will be recorded.
A copy of the administrative record including the draft permit, permit application, engineering drawings and other information will be available for public review from Friday, October 24 through Thursday, December 4, 2008 during normal business hours at the Reno County Clerk’s Office, Reno County Courthouse, 206 W. First Ave. in Hutchinson, at the KDHE Topeka office, 1000 S.W. Jackson St., Suite 320, in Topeka; and at the KDHE South Central District Office, 337 S. Market St., 6 th Floor, in Wichita. The permit application form is also available at www.kdheks.gov/waste.
KDHE will accept written comments on the proposed facility expansion from Friday, October 24, 2008 until 5 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2008. Comments should be mailed to Charles Bowers at the KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 W. Seventh St., Chanute, KS 66720; they can also be faxed to (620) 431-1211, or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Mailed comments postmarked by December 4, 2008 and received within one week thereafter will also be considered. After the comment period closes, KDHE will respond in writing to all formal comments received.
