Stream Advisory Removed for Middle Emma Creek in Harvey County

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have removed a stream advisory for Middle Emma Creek in Harvey County. The advisory was issued on June 10 and applied to Middle Emma Creek from Northwest 72 nd Street, continuing six miles downstream to West First Street, west of Newton.

On June 7, a landowner downstream of Hesston notified KDHE of a fish kill in Middle Emma Creek. KDHE determined that organic waste from Sunglo Feeds had overwhelmed the Hesston Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility (MWTF), resulting in the release of poor-quality effluent into Middle Emma Creek.

The Hesston MWTF has returned to normal operation and is in compliance with discharge limits. KDHE personnel sampled the Middle Emma Creek on July 1 and August 5. The department has determined that the water in the creek does not pose a significant risk for human contact and that pets and livestock can be allowed normal access to the creek again.
