Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Secretary Roderick L. Bremby has named John Mitchell as Director of Environment. Mitchell replaces Dr. Ron Hammerschmidt, who retired from state service effective February 15, 2008. The announcement comes after an extensive nationwide search.
Mitchell has worked for KDHE for more than 28 years and most recently served as Interim Director of Environment and Director of the Bureau of Environmental Field Services, where he was responsible for statewide operations of environmental programs in the agency’s six district offices and directed a statewide staff of more than 100 employees.
“John is a proven leader and has a great depth of knowledge and experience that will serve Kansas well,” said Bremby. “He has my utmost confidence and support.”
Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Microbiology and a master’s degree in Environmental Health Science from the University of Kansas.
