The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public participation meeting for a proposed expansion of the Lime Sludge Monofill located at 79 th and Gardner Road near De Soto in Johnson County.
The meeting will be held at the Olathe Municipal Services (OMS) Building, at 1385 S. Robinson in Olathe starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. The OMS Building is one block south of US-56 Highway on Robinson, just south of the National Guard Armory and Johnson County transit facility.
A brief presentation on the permit application review process will be followed by an informal opportunity for the public to get information on the proposed landfill. KDHE staff will be available to discuss how the proposed site geology, design, and operation will be evaluated through the technical review of the proposed landfill application.
The expansion would add an estimated 33 years of capacity to the landfill at projected disposal rates. This would be accomplished by increasing the permitted disposal area from 30.5 x 30.5 acres to 100.9 x 59.5 acres, but would not exceed an elevation of 786 feet above sea level.
Anyone interested in learning more about the project or providing input to KDHE staff early in the permit application review process is encouraged to attend. The meeting will not cover zoning or land use issues previously addressed by the Johnson County Commission .
By state law, KDHE must determine if the landfill application meets all required engineering, geological and environmental standards before issuing a permit. Only a preliminary evaluation of the application has been conducted at this time. KDHE will perform a detailed technical review of the application followed by a formal public notice before a final determination is made on whether to issue a permit for the proposed landfill.
