MEDIA ADVISORY: 2008 Health Disparities Conference Takes Place April 1 in Topeka

Former Olympian Barbara Jones Slater to Speak on U.S. Obesity Epidemic

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Center for Health Disparities will sponsor the 2008 Health Disparities Conference beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1 at the Maner Conference Center in Topeka. The media are invited and encouraged to attend.

Barbara Jones Slater, the youngest female gold medalist in Olympic track and field history, will discuss the epidemic of obesity in the U.S. during a luncheon address. KDHE Secretary Roderick L. Bremby will provide the opening keynote address.

The conference recognizes April as National Minority Health Month. The theme of the conference is ‘Healthy Cultures, HealthyKansas: Moving Forward’. It is the third conference hosted by the KDHE Center for Health Disparities since 2005.
