KDHE Names Interim Director of Environment

Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Secretary Roderick L. Bremby has named John Mitchell as Interim Director of Environment. Mitchell will replace Dr. Ron Hammerschmidt, who will retire from state service effective February 15, 2008.

Mitchell has worked for KDHE for more than 28 years and serves as the Director of the Bureau of Environmental Field Services. He is responsible for statewide operations of environmental programs in the agency’s six district offices and directs a statewide staff of more than 100 employees.

“John has built a wealth of experience and institutional knowledge throughout his tenure with the agency,” said Bremby. “I am confident he will capably lead the Division of Environment through this period of transition.”

Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Microbiology and a master’s degree in Environmental Health Science from the University of Kansas. A nationwide search will be conducted for Hammerschmidt’s permanent replacement.
