KDHE Environment Director Announces Retirement

KDHE Director of Environment Dr. Ron Hammerschmidt has announced his retirement from state service effective February 15, 2008, after nearly 28 years of service with the agency. He has served as director for the past 13 years.

Hammerschmidt has accepted a position with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where he will serve as the Region VII Director of the Division of Environmental Services in Kansas City.

“Retirement from the state of Kansas was not an easy decision,” said Hammerschmidt. “It is however, time for me to move on to different challenges.”

“Dr. Hammerschmidt has been an outspoken advocate of environmental initiatives and an asset to KDHE and the state of Kansas,” said Roderick L. Bremby, Secretary of KDHE. “While his transition will be a loss for the agency, the move will benefit the region through his new position with the EPA.”

“I remain committed to serving the people of Kansas, but now will also serve the other states of Region VII,” said Hammerschmidt. “In addition, I hope to make significant contributions to the implementation of national policies that will have positive impacts on our environment.”

EPA Region VII includes Kansas, as well as Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and nine tribal nations.
