KDHE Discourages Recreation In or On Verdigris River and Rock Creek
Southeast of Independence

KDHE is recommending against recreational use of the Verdigris River and Rock Creek southeast of Independence. The city’s two main sewage pump stations were damaged by the recent flooding and have been bypassing raw sewage downstream. The city anticipates repairs will be completed and the pump stations operating later this week.

Downstream public drinking water systems on the Verdigris should not be affected as public water systems have treatment facilities to appropriately treat the water. Anyone who has contact with the river water should wash with soap and water.

Rock Creek is more heavily affected and bodily contact with the stream should be avoided. Pets and livestock should be prevented from entering or drinking from Rock Creek.
