For Immediate Release
KDHE Office of Communications
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water order for the City of Elgin in Chautauqua County.
Four bacteriological samples have tested positive for total coliform and one of those samples also tested positive for fecal coliform. Chlorine residuals in the system are inadequate. The order will remain in effect until adequate disinfection residuals are maintained and results of additional bacteriological monitoring are negative.
Customers of the water system should boil water used for cooking or drinking and observe the following precautions until further notice.
The order will remain in effect until testing of water samples indicates no evidence of contamination and all other conditions which place the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. The system and/or KDHE will notify area media when the boil water advisory has been rescinded. For more information, call Joe Blubaugh, KDHE, Topeka at (785) 296-5795 or the City of Elgin at (620) 205-0067.
