Governor Announces Help for Environmental Efforts

$826,471 in grants to go to recycling, composting and waste recovery

Recycling conserves energy, protects natural resources, and creates jobs. To encourage recycling efforts around the state, Governor Kathleen Sebelius announced grants for reuse of construction and demolition waste, recycling, electronic waste collection and reclamation initiatives around Kansas.

“This program is a win-win for Kansans,” Sebelius said. “These grants will help keep our counties clean, support local economies and encourage innovative reuse of materials.”

The grants range in their amount from $637 to $200,000 and include projects for enhancing local recycling efforts, as well as processing electronic waste, sometimes referred to as “e-waste.” Each project is designed to help conserve landfill space and reduce the need for new solid waste facilities.

The Governor’s Solid Waste Grants Advisory Committee made the award selections and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will distribute the grants to the15 awardees. Recipients include regional solid waste management authorities representing more than 30 counties, private organizations and non-profit programs.

“Conservation of our natural resources starts in local communities,” said Roderick L. Bremby, Secretary of KDHE. “That’s why it’s important we continue to help provide the resources needed for those communities to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Bremby added that t he KDHE Bureau of Waste Management is also actively promoting recycling and waste reduction efforts within state government.

More than $15 million has been awarded in grants since the program began in 1996. A list of the grants awarded may be found below and at www.kdheks.gov/waste/about_grants.html.
