KDHE; Local Health Departments Not Associated with Childcare Union

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has received reports that representatives of a national childcare union are making personal contacts with licensed childcare providers under the pretense of being state employees.

In addition, KDHE has received reports from childcare providers that the union representatives are implying - or in some cases stating - that failure to sign their petition could result in the childcare provider losing their license.

Neither KDHE nor local health departments are affiliated with this union in any way. There are no childcare laws or regulations that address providers joining a union. Whether or not a childcare provider decides to join a union does not affect the legal status of their license or registered family day care home certificate.

KDHE did not provide the union in question with the names of childcare facilities or registered day care homes. This information is protected under state laws and regulations and would not be releasable in this situation.

If a childcare provider feels like they are being harassed, they are encouraged to contact local law enforcement for assistance.
