KDHE Seeks Comments on Finney County Landfill Expansion

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public comment period regarding the proposed expansion of the Finney County Landfill operated by Waste Connections, Inc. under a permit from KDHE.

KDHE will accept written comments on the proposed facility expansion until
5 p.m. on January 27, 2007. Comments should be sent to Larry Molder II, KDHE, Bureau of Waste Management, 1000 S.W. Jackson, Topeka, Kansas 66612-1366, by facsimile to (785) 296-1592, or by electronic mail to lmolder@kdheks.gov. Comments postmarked by January 27, 2007 received within one week thereafter will also be considered. After the comment period and hearing, KDHE will respond in writing to all formal comments received.

A copy of the administrative record including the draft permit, permit application, engineering drawings and other information will be available for public review through
January 27, 2007 during normal business hours at the KDHE Southwest District Office, 302 West McArtor Road, Dodge Cityand at the Finney County Public Library, 6 05 E. Walnut Street , in Garden City. T he permit application form is also available on the Internet at http://www.kdheks.gov/waste/ .

The Finney County Landfill is located at 1250 South Raceway Road approximately three miles southeast of Garden City, Kansas. The proposed expansion would connect two active areas of the landfill and add an additional 22 acres within the existing 220-acre landfill property for a total disposal area of 120.5 acres. The height of the landfill is proposed to be increased by 66 feet to a final elevation of 3,006 feet.
