KDHE Seeks Comments on Proposed Johnson County Landfill ExpansionThe Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold an informational meeting and public hearing regarding the proposed expansion of the Johnson County Landfill operated by Deffenbaugh Industries, Inc. Both sessions will be held on Thursday January 4, 2007 at the Shawnee Civic Center, Little Theatre, 13817 Johnson Drive in Shawnee. At the meeting scheduled for 6 p.m., KDHE personnel will answer questions regarding the landfill’s operations in an informal setting. At 7 p.m., a public hearing will be held for individuals to make formal comments that will be recorded. KDHE will also accept written comments until January 7, 2007. Comments should be sent by mail to Charles Bowers, KDHE Southeast District Office, 1500 West 7 th, Chanute, Kansas 66720-9701, by fax to (620) 431-1211, or by email to cbowers@kdhe.state.ks.us. Comments must be postmarked no later than January 7, 2007 to be considered. KDHE will respond in writing to all comments after the comment period and hearing. Copies of the draft expansion permit, permit application, engineering drawings and other information will be available for public review through Thursday, January 7, 2007 during normal business hours at the KDHE Northeast District Office at 800 West 24th Street in Lawrenceand at the Johnson County Environmental Department at 11811 South Sunset Drive, Suite 2700 in Olathe. T he permit application form is also available at www.kdheks.gov/waste/ . The Johnson County Landfill is located at 18181 West 53 rd St. in Shawnee. Deffenbaugh Industries, Inc. has submitted an application for an additional 163-acre municipal solid waste disposal area west of the existing facility to provide capacity for about 19 years at projected disposal rates. The expansion would create a combined 867-acre landfill site with 409 acres permitted for solid waste disposal.
