Public Meeting on Former National Zinc Company Site Scheduled for December 20The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will conduct a public meeting regarding a proposal to address contamination at the site of the former National Zinc Company and downstream to Drum Creek. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20 at the City Council Room in City Hall at 123 West Main St. in Cherryvale. Representatives of KDHE and companies being considered to perform the cleanup will present the proposal and answer questions from the public. The site is on the northwestern edge of Cherryvale and includes approximately 360 acres. The company operated a smelter there for many years, contaminating soil with lead, zinc, arsenic, and cadmium. Downstream sediments have also shown contamination. The public may also provide written comments to KDHE. Written comments must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2007 to be considered. The proposal will be available for viewing and copying at the following locations: KDHE Bureau of Environmental Remediation Fees will apply for any copies requested. KDHE may modify the proposal based upon the comments the agency receives. |
