In recognition of his exceptional contribution in the field of child safety in Kansas, the award was renamed in his honor as the Dr. Dennis Cooley Award of Excellence. “We take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Cooley for his commitment to Safe Kids Kansas and his dedication to the safety of the children in our state,” said Jan Stegelman, Coordinator, Safe Kids Kansas.
“We are also proud to honor two organizations and three individuals who have made significant contributions to the mission of Safe Kids Kansas, preventing accidental injury - the leading killer of our children in Kansas,” said Stegelman. The awards were presented during the Safe Kids Kansas Annual Meeting in Topeka, Kansas. The other award recipients are:
The Outstanding Achievement in Childhood Safety Award is given to an organization, community, or individual in Kansas who has demonstrated a strong dedication and commitment to accidental childhood injury prevention by implementing one or more innovative injury prevention programs in at least one priority risk area. The Outstanding Coalition Organization Award was presented to Kansas Action for Children for their contribution to the mission and goals of Safe Kids in the area of child passenger safety. Kansas Action for Children staff worked diligently this past year to strengthen Kansas’ child passenger safety law and to develop and implement a long-term public education strategy to inform parents and children about the importance of booster seats.
The Local Coalition of the Year was presented to Safe Kids Metro Kansas City for their success in bringing together diverse members of the community to actively participate in Safe Kids activities. The Coalition held multiple media and service events targeting at-risk and minority groups that has resulted in a strong public education and outreach campaign throughout communities in the KC Metro area.
