Public Hearings Scheduled for Sunflower Electric Air Quality Permit

A series of three public hearings regarding a draft air quality construction permit for Sunflower Electric Power Corp. is scheduled to take place at the following dates, times and locations:

  • Garden City: Tuesday, October 24 at 7 p.m.: County Commission Room, Finney County Office Building, 311 North 9 th St.
  • Topeka: Thursday, October 26 at 9 a.m.: Room 530 (5 th floor), Curtis State Office Building, 1000 S.W. Jackson St.
  • Lawrence: Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m.: Malott Room, Kansas Union, Level 6, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. (a parking garage is adjacent to the Kansas Union)

Sunflower has applied for an air quality construction permit to construct three new 700-megawatt coal-fired steam generating units at their generating station located in Holcomb. Additional hearings on this draft permit have been scheduled for October 24 in Garden City and on October 26 in Topeka. Parking is available in a garage adjacent to the Kansas Union.

A public comment period has been established to allow citizens the opportunity to express any concerns they may have about the proposed permit. The comment period will end at 5 p.m. on November 30. All comments should be submitted in writing to: Rick Bolfing, KDHE Bureau of Air and Radiation, 1000 S.W. Jackson, Suite 310, Topeka, KS 66612-1366 or presented at the hearing.

A copy of the proposed permit, permit application, all supporting documentation, and all information relied upon during the permit application review process are available for public review at the above address until November 30 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To obtain or review the proposed permit and supporting documentation, contact Rick Bolfing at (785) 296-1576. Also, copies of the proposed permit only can be reviewed at the KDHE Northwest District Office, 2301 East 13 th St., Hays, or at the KDHE Southwest District Office, 302 W. MacArtor Road, Dodge City. To review the proposed permit only, contact the Air Quality District Representative at (785) 625-5663 in the KDHE Northwest District Office, or the District Environmental Administrator at (620) 225-0596 in the KDHE Southwest District Office. The standard departmental cost will be assessed for any copies requested.

People requiring special accommodations to participate in the public hearing should notify Rick Bolfing in writing at the above address in Topeka no later than 5 p.m. on November 6. Please be sure to specify the nature of the accommodation being requested.
