KDHE School Art Contest Promotes Environment

Deadline for K-12 student art submissions is September 30

Are you a Kansas student (kindergarten though grade 12) and looking for a chance to showcase your artistic talents? If so, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has an opportunity for you.

KDHE is accepting student artwork to be considered for the 2007 "Kansas Don't Spoil It" calendar contest. The "Kansas Don't Spoil It" campaign promotes awareness about recycling, composting, littering, proper disposal of hazardous waste (old paint, cleaning products, insecticides, and motor oil) and any other activity that helps keep the environment clean.

KDHE is looking for artwork that demonstrates the importance of good environmental practices and shows activities that everyone can participate in to preserve the beauty and natural resources of Kansas. Winning entries will be featured in the annual wall calendar that will be distributed throughout the state.

"This is a great way to get Kansas kids thinking about the environment, as well as showcase their artistic talents," said Bill Bider, Director of KDHE's Bureau of Waste Management. "I look forward to the contest every year. We have some amazing young artists in our state."

Artwork can be created using markers, watercolors, tempera, oils, crayon, chalk, acrylic, or colored pencils. Pen and ink artwork will not be accepted. All artwork must be submitted on 8.5" x 11", unlined, white paper. Artwork should be mailed flat; please do not fold. Each entry must include the student's name, grade, school name, school address, school phone number, and teacher's name on the back. Entries become the property of KDHE and may be used for promotional purposes. Entries cannot be returned.

The deadline for submissions is September 30. Please mail artwork to: "Kansas Don't Spoil It!" Calendar Contest, KDHE-BWM, 1000 SW Jackson, Suite 320, Topeka, KS 66612-1366.
