Outbreak of Gastrointestinal Illness Among Biking Across Kansas
ParticipantsIdentified as Norovirus
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has identified norovirus as a cause
for at least some of the cases of gastrointestinal illness among several participants of the
Biking Across Kansas (BAK) tour.
About 850 people from 33 states, including Kansas, participated in the tour. In addition
to Kansas, KDHE epidemiologists have identified ill persons from ten states.
Twelve BAK participants have tested positive for norovirus through the KDHE Division of
Health and Environmental Laboratories; one of these persons has also tested positive for
rotavirus through a private laboratory. Some samples are being sent to the state public health
laboratory in Minnesota for further testing.
"We're continuing our investigation to determine the scope of these illnesses and what
factors may have contributed to the outbreak," said Dr. Howard Rodenberg, Director of the KDHE
Division of Health and State Health Officer. "We appreciate everyone's cooperation and continued
patience as this process unfolds."
Both norovirus and rotovirus illnesses cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and some stomach
cramping. Some also experience a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and fatigue.
Symptoms usually last about one or two days.
These viruses are easily spread. Food handlers should not prepare food for three days
after recovery from any diarrheal disease. Symptomatic persons should also refrain from working
with the young and the elderly and should not be involved in patient care. Children who are sick
must not attend school or day care.
To prevent the spread of these illnesses:
- Wash hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before
preparing food and eating
- Carefully wash fruits and vegetables
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces, such as bathroom fixtures and
toys, with a bleach-based cleaner or other disinfectant
- Immediately remove and wash clothing and linens with soap and hot water after being
soiled
- Refrain from preparing food or caring for others if you have diarrhea
