WHY: Unintentional injuries are still the leading cause of death for Kansas kids. Preventable injuries to children peak during the summer when children are less supervised, have more free time and engage in more outdoor activities. Drowning is the fourth leading accidental injury-related killer of Kansas children ages 0 to 14. Forty percent of theses deaths occur in swimming pools and 15% in natural bodies of water. Through public awareness activities like National Safe Kids Week, Safe Kids Kansas seeks to educate parents and caregivers about potential risks to children and adults' role in preventing injuries.

According to a recent study published in the April 5 issue of JAMA, the US prevalence of overweight in female children and adolescents rose from 13.8% in 1999-2000 to 16% in 2003-2004. The prevalence of overweight in male children and adolescents also rose from 14% to 18.2% during the same time periods. According to the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey results conducted in Kansas, 13.3% of Kansas high school students are at risk of becoming overweight and 11.9% are overweight. The same survey showed that only 41.3% of high school students participated in the recommended amount of 60 minutes physical activity per day on five or more days per week.

Note to the Media:
* Information about the events at other host sites around the state is attached.
