KDHE ACCEPTS PUBLIC COMMENTS ON PROPOSED EXPANSION OF SEWARD COUNTY LANDFILL

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is accepting public comment on an on a proposal from Seward County to modify its permit to expand the existing municipal solid waste and construction and demolition landfill within the existing 240-acre property.

The proposed landfill expansion is estimated to have capacity for approximately 4,975,000 cubic yards of waste disposal, with the period of active landfill operation estimated at 27 years. The landfill is located east of Liberal, approximately one mile northeast of the intersection of U.S. Highways 83 and 54. KDHE will accept written public comments through Monday, November 21.

A copy of the application and public notice has been posted on the KDHE Bureau of Waste Management web site at www.kdheks.gov/waste/. Additionally, a copy of the permit application, site plan, and associated documents will be available for public review through Monday, November 21, 2005 during normal business hours at the KDHE office on 1000 SW Jackson, Suite 320, in Topeka and the Seward County Courthouse at 415 Washington, in Liberal.
